Why should I Recycle my plastic???

As a reader of this blog, hopefully recycling your plastic waste is second nature by now, but if there’s still room for improvement the below reasons should help to give you a boost to make an extra effort, and if you are already recycling at 100% this list should give you reason to feel positive for your eco-conscious actions.

1. Recycling means upcycling
   An emptied plastic bottle still has life in it and can be used again, so filter your rubbish and then see what you can use for craft projects and upcycling—providing cheap, creative and eco-friendly fun for you, the kids or a local school or community centre.
2. Recycling provides material for new products
   On a larger scale, the more we pop our plastic bottles in the recycling bin, the more material there is available for manufacturers to turn it into something else in industry, for example as fibres to make new clothes.
3. Recycling conserves energy
   It takes two thirds less energy to make products from recycled plastic than it does to make them from scratch from raw materials*. This reduction of industrial activity means less pollution and fewer green house gases emitted.
4. Recycling saves natural resources
   Taking used materials and recycling them into new products results in a reduced need for new raw materials, meaning, quite simply, that natural resources can be preserved.
5. Recycling reduces landfill
   The more we recycle, the more plastics are turned into new products and the less waste ends up in landfills—recycling just one tonne of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space*.

So keep on sorting through your rubbish to make sure your plastics take the route of recycling. Happy recycling, folks!
